This is how Rhett looked his whole first day of being with us. He slept and slept. We would wiggle him and try to wake him and he never woke. I tried feeding him and nothing. We tried changing his diaper and nothing. A doctor even came in and flicked his foot and trying scaring him awake and still nothing. Very LETHARGIC. By 5:15 pm that day they told me with him not eating that this wasn't normal. So they started checking his blood sugar every half hour. The results turned out worse and worse as the night wore on. By 10 pm several doctors were called and they decided it was time for Rhett to have further help. They had decided maybe Rhett had the Group B Strep where I wasn't treated. They took him from my arms and put him in a back nursery room where I wasn't allowed to go. I stood by the counter listening to him scream and it felt like my heart was breaking. It was horrible to hear Rhett scream and not being able to go back and comfort him. After they had for 2 hours I was able to go back and see him.....
and this is how he looked. I was so devastated. Rhett had to be given an IV to help with the possible GBS (They tried twice and collapsed the other veins) , and to help him with liquids where he hadn't ate in so long. They had drawn his blood to do several test. His oxygen levels were declining so they had to give him oxygen followed by chest X-rays. Something was wrong with my baby, doctors just weren't sure what it was at this point, so they were doing some other standard things to help as a cure-all.
By 7am the next morning (the 16th) I was finally able to have my baby back in my room and in my arms. It felt so good to hold him again. It was awkward though. Having to worry about an IV in his arm was so worry some. The blood tests came in that day around 4pm saying that the GBS had came back negative and that he had clinical sepsis. Clinical Sepsis is a general term for a blood infection. (a blood infection could lead to other infections and other complications). They figured Rhett had been sick for awhile in the womb, and cause the baby to not grow or gain weight. They said that's probably why Rhett came out the way he did. He was in a rush and he didn't want to be sick anymore. How does a baby get sick in the womb? I dunno. And neither did the doctors. They said its just one of those rare things. They said it happens on a couple times a year at this hospital. Blood work was again done at 7 pm that night. Rhett's infections levels had risen and it cause for more alert. They turned things over to primary children's hospital. Primary's ordered that Rhett be put on 2 antibiotics alternating 5 times through out the day for 7 days. One of the antibiotics can cause babies to go deaf which means Rhett will have to have hearing tests at 3 days old, 1 week old, 2 weeks old, 3 weeks old, 6 months old and every 6 months after that till he is 10 yrs. old. But its a chance we were willing to take. Anything to help my baby get better.
